Yellow-Billed Babbler
Turdoides affinis
About This Species
This noisy babbler moves in tight, chattering flocks of half a dozen or more through gardens, scrub, and cultivated land across southern India and Sri Lanka. Watch for a loud, cackling chorus as the group hops and forages through leaf litter and low vegetation for insects. It is non-migratory and bold around people, so it turns up reliably year-round in parks and village edges rather than at any particular season.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- A common, confiding species that tolerates people well at ordinary garden distances, so a few metres is enough to watch normal behaviour without disturbance.
- Avoid pushing in close to a flock feeding a nest, since disturbance at active nests is restricted under wildlife protection law in both India and Sri Lanka.
- As with any bird, back off if the group gives alarm calls or scatters.
