About This Species
A large, robust pigeon of woodland edges, savanna and cultivated land across much of South America, often seen perched prominently in treetops or flying in small flocks between roosting and feeding areas. It has a distinctive scaly-looking neck patch and a deep, resonant cooing call that carries well through open woodland. Mornings and late afternoons, when birds move between roosts and feeding grounds, offer the most active viewing.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Keep a reasonable distance when approaching perched or feeding birds, since flushing a flock repeatedly wastes energy and can push birds away from good habitat.
- Wildlife protections and their enforcement vary considerably across the South American countries within its range, so no single rule should be assumed to apply everywhere.
- As with any common, wide-ranging species, moving slowly and avoiding direct approaches toward nests or roosts is the simplest way to minimise disturbance.
