About This Species
This medium-sized pigeon favours forest edges, riverine woodland, and semi-open cultivated land across much of Central America and northern South America, often perching prominently in fruiting trees where it feeds on figs and other soft fruit. Its low, throaty cooing is a useful cue in areas of dense foliage, and small groups can often be seen flying between roost and feeding trees at dawn and dusk. Fruiting season in a given area tends to draw the most reliable concentrations.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Viewing from several metres away with binoculars, rather than approaching a feeding tree directly, avoids scattering a feeding group and lets birds settle back quickly.
- Legal protection for native birds varies across the many countries spanning this species' range, so it is best to check local rules rather than assume uniform protection, particularly given some local hunting pressure on pigeons in parts of its range.
