Diamond Dove

A tiny, delicate dove of arid and semi-arid Australia, it favors open scrublands, grasslands, and the margins of watercourses where sparse ground cover allows it to forage for grass seeds. Watch for the distinctive white-spotted grey wings and vivid red orbital ring around the eye, and listen for its soft, mournful cooing — a gentle, repeated note that carries well in still air. The best viewing opportunities come in the early morning when small flocks gather at waterholes and creek edges to drink, particularly during the dry season when water sources concentrate birds predictably and reliably.
