About This Species
Look for this small, quiet dove on the ground or low perches in open woodland, scrubby grassland and around farmland across northern and central Australia, usually singly or in pairs rather than large flocks. Its soft, mellow cooing call is understated compared to louder doves nearby, and it feeds mainly on fallen seed picked from bare ground and short grass. It is present year-round, so there is no strongly seasonal window, though early morning feeding on open ground tends to give the clearest views.
