About This Species
Look for it on the ground in farmland, village edges and open cultivation across South and Southeast Asia, where it feeds on fallen grain and seeds, often alongside other doves. Males show a soft grey head and pinkish body with a black half-collar, distinguishing them from duller females. It is most easily found early morning or late afternoon around grain stores, threshing areas and open tracks.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- A distance of 10–15 metres is generally enough to watch feeding birds without flushing them.
- Protection of wild birds varies by country across the range, and it is often treated as a common, unprotected species near agricultural land, so check local regulations if in doubt.
- Avoid approaching nests directly, since disturbance can cause adults to abandon eggs or chicks.
