Groove-Billed Ani

Look in scrubby, semi-open habitat and farmland edges across Central America and northern South America for a lanky, all-black bird with a distinctive deep, laterally flattened bill, often seen in small social groups perched together or sunning with wings spread. It nests and roosts communally, so finding one bird often means several more are nearby. Its harsh, whining call and habit of moving through low scrub in loose flocks make it easy to identify once located.
