About This Species
Found across open woodland, savanna, and scrubby thornbush in sub-Saharan Africa, this cryptically patterned nightjar spends the day roosting motionless on bare ground or along a low branch, relying entirely on its bark-like plumage to avoid detection. After dark it hawks insects low through the understory and over open ground, and the best way to locate it is by listening for the male's persistent, rapidly repeated churring call delivered from a favoured perch, or by scanning roads and firebreaks with a torch for the distinctive orange-red eyeshine. The optimal window is the dry season breeding period from August to November, when males call most actively in the hours after sunset and before dawn, and reduced vegetation makes spotlighting considerably more productive.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Maintain a minimum distance of 20–30 metres during the day when birds are roosting cryptically on the ground or in low vegetation, and increase this to at least 50 metres if observing at active nest sites.
- Across its range in sub-Saharan Africa, it is protected under national wildlife legislation in countries including South Africa (National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act), Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, so always secure any required permits before intentional close approach or photography.
- Use passive observation methods such as listening for the distinctive churring call at dusk rather than using playback or artificial light, as torch or spotlight use near roosting or nesting birds can cause flushing, nest abandonment, and disruption to nocturnal foraging behaviour.
