• In the United Kingdom it is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, and equivalent protections apply under the EU Birds Directive in its European wintering range, though some populations are also subject to licensed hunting seasons in parts of that range, so rules are not uniform everywhere.
• Watch flighting flocks from a hide, vehicle, or public vantage point rather than approaching feeding fields or roosts directly, since flushing a large flock wastes energy the birds need over winter.
