About This Species
Dabbles and grazes at the edges of lakes, marshes, and slow rivers across a wide altitude range in South America, often in small, tight-knit groups. Activity picks up around dawn and dusk, when birds move between roosting and feeding areas, making these the best times to watch. The bright yellow bill, contrasting with a dark head, is the clearest field mark at a distance.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Viewing from a fixed point on the shoreline, at least the width of the water body away, avoids pushing birds off the water.
- Waterfowl hunting and protection regulations differ significantly by country across its range, so local rules should be checked before visiting any site where hunting is permitted.
- Approaching directly on foot along open shoreline is more disturbing than watching from cover or a vehicle.
