About This Species
Watch for this compact, brown swallow relative wheeling around cliff faces, mountain gorges, and increasingly buildings and bridges across southern Europe, where it hawks flying insects with agile, swooping flight. It nests on ledges and crevices of rock faces or under eaves, and is present year-round in much of its range with only limited seasonal movement. Clear daylight hours around cliffs or gorges give the best views of its flight and foraging behaviour.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Observe nesting cliffs or bridge structures from below or at a distance rather than climbing toward ledges, since nest sites are easily disturbed by close approach.
- Protection for nesting birds varies across the many European and Mediterranean countries within its range, so check local regulations rather than assuming a single standard.
- Avoiding loud noise or climbing near an active nest ledge during the breeding season is the simplest way to reduce disturbance.
