About This Species
Look along the gravelly beds of clean, well-oxygenated rivers and streams, where this small bottom-dwelling fish shelters among stones and feeds on invertebrates close to the substrate. It is most easily seen by wading quietly and looking into shallow riffle areas, or by watching from a bridge over clear water on a bright day. Activity peaks through the warmer months, and it can be locally abundant where water quality is good.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Observe from the bank or shallow water without disturbing the streambed, since silt kicked up by wading can smother eggs laid among the gravel during the spawning season.
- Freshwater fish habitats in many countries carry protection against damage or pollution under environmental law, even though this species itself is not individually protected.
- Avoid removing fish from the water for a closer look, and release any incidentally caught individual promptly and gently.
