Ermine

A small but ferociously active predator, it favors hedgerows, stone walls, woodland edges, and riparian corridors where small mammal prey is abundant, threading through ground-level cover with a distinctive bounding gait and an arched back. Watch for brief, frenetic movement between gaps in rocks or roots, and listen for sharp, repetitive chittering calls when the animal is alarmed or cornered. Winter offers the best observation opportunities, when the white pelage of northern populations stands out against snow-free patches of dark earth or leaf litter, and reduced vegetation cover forces forays into the open, particularly around dawn and dusk when crepuscular activity supplements its predominantly nocturnal habits.
