Gray Wolf

Found across boreal forests, tundra, and open grasslands, these highly social predators live and hunt in structured packs, often covering vast territories that can exceed 1,000 square kilometers. Scan open meadows and valley floors at dawn and dusk for moving shapes at the tree line, and listen for howling — a low, sustained call that carries for miles and is most frequently heard during territorial reinforcement and pup-rearing in late winter through early spring. Winter offers the best viewing conditions: reduced vegetation opens sightlines, dark coats contrast sharply against snow, and pack activity increases around large ungulate prey; Yellowstone's Lamar Valley and comparable northern wilderness areas with active prey herds are your most reliable vantage points.
