About This Species
This sure-footed mountain goat-antelope favours steep alpine and subalpine terrain across the mountains of Europe, moving between high pastures in summer and lower forested slopes in winter. Look for small herds grazing on grassy ledges at dawn or dusk, when they are most active. Binoculars are essential, as they are often spotted on distant scree slopes or ridgelines.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Keep at least 50 to 100 metres away and use a scope or binoculars rather than closing the distance, since chamois are easily startled on precipitous terrain where a panicked flight risks a fall.
- Hunting seasons and protection status vary by country and region within the Alps and other European ranges, so check local regulations before an outing.
- Approaching slowly from below and avoiding sudden movements or dogs off-lead reduces the chance of flushing a herd.
