Sparkling Violetear

A common hummingbird of Andean gardens, forest edges and montane scrub from Venezuela to Bolivia, often seen hovering at flowering shrubs or perched conspicuously while giving its sharp, repetitive call. Look for the shimmering violet ear patches and chest band flashing in direct sunlight as it feeds or chases rivals from a favoured patch of flowers. It is present year-round at mid to high elevations and is readily drawn to sugar-water feeders.
