White-Crested Elaenia

A small, crested flycatcher-like bird of woodland edges, scrub and gardens through much of South America, often more easily heard than seen as it gives a thin, rising whistle from cover. Watch for its habit of sallying out from a perch to catch insects or take small fruit, flicking its crest up when alert or agitated. Many populations are migratory, moving between breeding and non-breeding ranges, so local abundance shifts through the year.
