White-Crowned Sparrow

Look for the bold black-and-white striped crown as it forages on the ground in loose flocks, scratching through leaf litter and low cover for seeds and insects. Shrubby habitat edges, chaparral and garden feeders are reliable spots in winter across much of the US, while breeding birds favour western mountains and arctic tundra in summer. It is often approachable at feeding stations if left undisturbed.
