About This Species
This small, dark-bellied goose gathers in large flocks on estuaries, mudflats and coastal grazing marshes across northern Europe, Asia and North America, where it grazes on eelgrass and saltmarsh vegetation at the tideline. Winter is the best time to see it, when non-breeding flocks feed steadily through the day and roost on open water or sandbanks at high tide, often moving between feeding grounds as the tide turns. Scan open mudflats with a scope for tightly packed feeding flocks, and listen for a distinctive low, conversational croaking call.
