About This Species

Look for tight, fast-moving flocks wheeling low over open steppe grasslands, agricultural fields, and lake margins, often mixed with larger White-fronted or Bean Geese that can initially obscure them. The striking chestnut-red breast patch, white facial blaze, and bold black-and-white flank stripes make birds unmistakable at close range, while the high-pitched, rapid double note — a shrill *kik-kik* — cuts through the noise of mixed goose flocks and often draws the eye before the bird is spotted. Winter visits to Black Sea coastal regions, particularly in Bulgaria and Romania, offer the most reliable sightings from November through February, with dawn and dusk feeding movements across harvested grain fields providing the best sustained views in good light.
