About This Species
A familiar bird of villages, farmland and open country across South Asia, usually seen in pairs or small groups foraging on the ground for insects and scraps. Its loud, chattering calls carry from wires, rooftops and treetops and often give it away before it is seen. It can be found year-round, with activity picking up noticeably in the early morning.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- It is generally tolerant of people and a few metres' distance is normally sufficient for good views without causing stress.
- Avoid lingering near an active nest during the breeding season, and resist feeding it, since habituation to handouts can alter natural foraging behaviour.
