About This Species
Search shrubby wetland edges, willow thickets and garden hedgerows for a small, bright yellow songbird with chestnut streaking on the male, gleaning insects actively from foliage. Its sweet, whistled song is a good way to locate one before it is seen. Late spring and early summer during the breeding season, or during migration passage, are the best times to catch it.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- It nests low in dense shrubs, so avoid pushing into thick vegetation where a nest might be hidden, and keep dogs leashed near likely nesting cover.
- It is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act across its US and Canadian range, which makes disturbing active nests unlawful.
- Viewing from established paths rather than entering shrubbery is the safer approach.
