Brown-Headed Barbet

A vocal, fruit-eating bird of forest, plantations and leafy gardens across peninsular India and Sri Lanka, often heard well before it is seen thanks to its persistent, monotonous call repeated for long stretches, especially in the early morning and midday heat. Look for it perched high in fig or other fruiting trees, where its stocky green body and streaked head blend well with foliage. It is present year-round and easiest to locate by call before scanning the canopy.
