About This Species
Endemic to Taiwan, this barbet keeps mainly to the mid- and upper canopy of forest and wooded parks, where it favours fruiting trees. Its repetitive, hollow "on-on-on" call carries well and is usually the first clue to its presence, well before it is spotted in dense foliage. It can be found year-round, so a fruiting tree at any season is worth a patient look upward.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Viewing from the ground at a normal distance while it feeds in the canopy is enough and does not require close approach.
- It nests in excavated tree cavities, so avoid disturbing or drawing attention to a nest hole if one is found.
- Taiwan's wildlife conservation law protects native bird species from deliberate disturbance, so treat any nesting activity with the same caution you would give a protected species elsewhere.
