About This Species
Look and listen in gardens, plantations and forest edge across the Western Ghats and southern India, where this stocky, fruit-eating bird favours fig trees and other fruiting canopy. A monotonous, repetitive 'kutroo-kutroo' call, given for long stretches especially in the morning, usually reveals its presence well before it is seen. Fruiting fig trees in early morning are the most reliable spot to watch it feeding alongside other frugivores.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- A few metres of distance with binoculars is sufficient to watch feeding birds without disturbing them.
- It is a widespread resident with general wildlife protection under India's national wildlife legislation, and nest cavities excavated in dead wood should not be disturbed.
- Avoid lingering directly beneath an active nest hole, since repeated visits can draw the attention of predators to the site.
