Perch

A widespread freshwater fish of lakes, ponds and slow rivers across Europe, recognisable by its spiny dorsal fin and vertical dark bars, typically found in loose shoals around weed beds, jetties and other structure. Juveniles and small shoals are often visible from banks or jetties in clear water during warmer months, while larger adults tend to hold near cover and are more often encountered by anglers than casual observers. Activity increases through spring and summer as water warms.
