Look for this fish holding station in clear, well-oxygenated rivers, streams and lakes, often near undercut banks, riffles or shaded pools where it waits to ambush insects and smaller fish. It is most visible at dawn and dusk when it rises to take insects from the surface, and is easiest to spot by watching for rings on the water or a shadow holding steady against the current. Clear conditions after a period of stable water levels, viewed from a bank or bridge with polarised sunglasses, give the best chance of seeing one.

- Move slowly and keep a low profile near the bank, since this species is easily spooked by vibration, shadows and sudden movement in clear water.
