About This Species
Scratches through leaf litter and undergrowth in forest and forest edge, often in small groups, with males giving a loud crowing call at dawn and dusk that carries well beyond where the bird is standing. Look for it at forest margins near clearings or trails, where it is more likely to step into the open than deep inside dense cover. Early morning is the most active and most vocal time to encounter it.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Keep a reasonable distance and let the bird continue foraging rather than walking directly toward it, since it will readily bolt into dense cover if pressed.
- Protections for wild birds vary across its range in South and Southeast Asia, and in some areas it is also hunted or kept as domestic stock, so local rules should be checked rather than assumed.
- Slow, indirect movement gives a far better chance of a sustained view than a direct approach.
