Merlin

This small, compact falcon hunts low and fast over open moorland, coastal dunes, and farmland, chasing small birds like larks and pipits in direct, level pursuit rather than the stoop typical of larger falcons. Look for a stocky, short-winged silhouette flying close to the ground, often perched on a fence post or low rise scanning for prey. Breeding birds favour open upland country in the warmer months, while many move to lowland and coastal areas outside the breeding season, making autumn and winter a good time to spot one hunting over stubble fields or estuary edges.
